Subject: Report of the new MagnetU device
Date: January 31, 2010
We are asked to explore a possible new development in the social networking world called the “MagnetU" in order to prepare for the proximity's spring focus group session. MagnetU is the first, “wearable location based mobile social network.” We should include questions and ideas regarding how students may feel about using a device like this and whether or not they actually would use it.
What is MagnetU
MagnetU is a mobile accessory that allows someone to take social networking outside the home or workplace. It can work for someone on a personal level, networking level or even a professional level. By having the device turned on it will read the profiles of other MagnetU users and match it based on the criteria you are looking for. If you are looking for a date and someone who meets a few criteria is physically around you, you will get a text message saying, “ATTRACTIVE.” If they are a strong match both physically and characteristically you will receive a text message saying, “HOT.” AT that point, it is up to you what you would like to do next.
As far as privacy, it is pretty safeguarded. If someone is going out and would not like to used the features of the MagnetU, simply turn the device off. It is also not a GPS based device to it will not be like your cell phone provide and send a GPS signal to find your location.
How MagnetU can impact social networking
MagnetU applies the principles of Myspace and Facebook to the real world. You simply update your device online giving criteria about yourself along with what you are looking for in a friend, date or employee. Once you have done that then while you are in a park or a coffee shop your personal “about me” section and “interests” section is matched with other users. Some of the information is also even texted to the user who matches to help spark a conversation.
This application may be useful to employers so they may also be able to make sure they have a qualified and even a well rounded applicant. It can also help the job seeker so they can update their previous experience and all the different job skills they have. This can make the application process much easier for both parties. Questions to ask TU social network users
We should first find out how many people use, or are considering using other social networking websites like Myspace and Facebook. Out of this demographic we should ask the following:
How often do you use Myspace and Facebook to connect with new people?
Do you feel more comfortable finding compatibility at your own home, or face to face with a person with common interests?
This would help to understand how people are currently using social networking sites. If it is solely to connect with friends they already have then this may help give insight as to why they don’t use it to meet new friends.
